Our relationship with food with a complicated process, however our need for sustenance from what we eat, remains the same - pure primal instinct.
Many factors affect the way we think about food. We are constantly being bombarded by images and information. Most of these influences are via social media, television, radio, internet, books, our peers, family etc.
Food is essential to sustain and develop not just the body but also the mind and soul! At the pace our current society has set, we are often eating on the go and out the door. It has become more of a functional and time sensitive activity rather than an important activity to be enjoyed with all our senses and for optimal nutritional benefit.
Do we really taste our food and how often do we just settle for something which does not particuarly taste good but 'it does the job'. Or taken to the other extreme how often do we overindulge in food whenever we relax or have more time? Looking at our interaction with food and how we fit into our daily lives can often give us perspective of where we can make improvements and how our lifestyle (including sleep, exercise, stress management, environmental interaction) impacts our relationship with food.
Often we are not aware that the routines we enforce upon ourselves directly or indirectly, impacts our health. It often takes an illness or a bout of ill health for example, for us to gain some perspective on how important food is. Diet is therefore a fundamental keystone in assessing our health and by raising our awareness of what we eat, when and how we eat, and why we eat certain foods - helps us establish links, patterns and plan the best way forwards.
