Herbal medicine has much to contribute to the development of holistic health with the use of healing plants provided by nature. It has a long tradition in all cultures supporting the benefits of using herbs. Apart from prophylactic and culinary uses, herbs are used according to their actions working synergistically to provide the body with the most appropriate help to maintain homeostasis. Herbal medicine works to stimulate the body’s own healing, aimed at treating underlying factors contributing to an imbalance of health as well as relieving associated symptoms by supporting the body. Where much of modern medicine can have unwelcome side effects, herbs can provide a safe and effective solution to a wide range of physical and emotional problems (when used under the supervision of a qualified herbalist).
As part of a treatment plan a herbalist can use herbs in loose or powdered dried form, liquid form (fluid extracts, tinctures, decoctions, teas, infusions) or tablet form depending on individual requirements. Chinese, Ayurvedic and Western Herbal Medicine also work on an energetic level taking into consideration the qualities of herbs (e.g. heating, cooling, dry, bitter, sour, heavy, light, oily etc.) as well as the constitution of an individual. This aids the formulation of a detailed treatment protocol to work with the body's own energetics to encourage optimal health and homeostasis.
